Education programme

Our Education programme aims to increase the literacy and leadership of women’s and girls in the Busoga region. We do this through the following projects:

Women’s literacy empowerment project

The Women’s literacy empowerment project gives rural women and girls access to free adult literacy education in their communities. We do this by running a holistic community led literacy project that includes dedicated weekly workshops, one to one home outreaches and drop in sessions at our office.   On the project women and girls learn to read, write and count both in their local language (Lusoga) and in English (the official language in Uganda).  They also develop public speaking, advocacy and leadership skills.

Our guiding principles

Access – Our programme is open to all women and girls who wish to take part, the programme is free, workshops take place at a time agreed by women in the community (Sunday afternoons)

Sustainability – We empower local people to educate women in their own communities. Our facilitators are local teachers who are passionate about education. We use free local spaces for the workshops e.g. school classrooms and community spaces. We use locally available materials

Empowerment – our programme focuses on supporting women with the skills to become self sufficient and so the curriculum also includes financial literacy, writing letters, CV’s and public speaking. Women are also encouraged to join a class committee that meets once per month. The committee provides an opportunity for women to apply their new knowledge and skills, and to gain confidence in public speaking and leadership in an unthreatening environment.
